Bachelor of Technology Civil Engineering
Philosophy of the Programme and Description of the Programme
The Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering Program shall endeavour to produce hands on engineering technologists who are versatile, innovative, entrepreneurial, and globally competitive. The graduates will be able to apply engineering technologies focused on national priority areas that will cultivate creative and innovative undertakings in order to promote economic development. To ensure success of the programme, linkages and partnership with the government, industry and other institutions in the areas of Engineering, technology, education, research and extension services will be established.
Admission Requirements
A candidate must satisfy any of the following minimum requirements:
- Be a holder of KCSE Mean Grade of C+ and above, with a minimum of C+ in Mathematics, Physics/Physical Science and Chemistry; or
- Be a holder of KACE with at least 2 Principal passes in Mathematics and Physics and 1 subsidiary pass; or
- Be a holder of a Degree in related disciplines from an institution recognized by Meru University of Science and Technology Senate.
- Be a holder of a validated diploma in civil Engineering, building technology, water engineering or a related field in civil engineering or
- Have any other relevant qualifications as equivalent to that in section a), b), c) and d) above from an institution recognized by the Meru University of Science and Technology Senate.
Programme Learning Objectives (PLOs)
The main objective of this programme to help students acquire practical and conceptual skills in research, consultancy, planning, design, development, operation and maintenance founded on scientific principles, upon which Civil Engineering is based.
The programme will develop professionals who can enable the Country to achieve its goals. Among this is the Vision 2030 i.e. Kenya to industrialize by 2030 and Millennium Development Goals.
The professionals must therefore have high level of understanding and competence in all aspects of Civil Engineering.
Upon successful completion of this program, the graduate will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering to solve complex engineering problems
- Communicate effectively on engineering activities with the engineering community and with the society at large.
- Use research based knowledge and research methods of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data to provide valid conclusions
- Design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability.
- Observe ethical and professional responsibility in engineering practice.
- Demonstrate the ability to use techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as an individual, and as a member in diverse multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the engineering and project management principles and apply these to one’s own work and as a member of multidisciplinary teams.
Expected Career Directions
Civil engineers plan, design, construct, operate, maintain, inspect various structures and components that include roads, bridges, buildings, offshore structures, airports, seaports, railroads, highways, waterways, dams and water treatment plants, and many other public facilities. This can be done in public or private sector as consultants, contractors, managers or as trainers. Some of the subfield in civil engineering include
- Structural engineering (involves the analysis, design and selection of materials /components that make the skeleton of a structure to ensure that it withstands forces/loads subjected to it)
- Transport engineering (design, construction and maintenance of roads, airports, railways and their support systems)
- Hydraulic and water resources engineering
- Construction and engineering management
- Environmental engineering
- Engineering survey
- Geotechnical engineering
- Materials engineering etc
